BIG FISH LITTLE FISH LEVELS

 

BIG FISH LITTLE FISH SWIM PROGRAM LEVELS – OVER 3 YEARS


Red Fish 

Enter and exit the water safely and confidently.   

Get face wet. 

With assistance submerge in waist depth water, open eyes and blow bubbles. 

Assisted front float/swim for 5 seconds blowing bubbles. 

Hold a floatation aid and float on back for 5+ seconds and then stand. 

Kick with aid on front demonstrating splashing kicks for 5+ metres. 

Answer questions about dangers in the aquatic environment


Blue Fish 

Enter water and return to nearest side independently. 

Torpedo for 5+ metres. 

Kick with an aid on front and back for 10+ metres. 

Recover from a front float and back float to a standing position unassisted. 

Float with flotation aid for 30 seconds. 

Be pulled to safety by grasping a rescue aid. 

Answer questions about dangers in the aquatic environment. 


Yellow Fish 

Perform a slide in entry. 

Elementary freestyle and backstroke with and/or without board for 7 metres. 

Roll from a front float to a back float. 

Demonstrate horizontal arm sculling actions.  

Tread water 10+ seconds

Swim through a submerged hoop and recover an object from chest depth. 

Swim for 30+ seconds while holding a flotation aid. 

Answer questions about dangers in the aquatic environment


Green Fish – Transitional 

Introduction to freestyle breathing. 

Swim 7+ metres of freestyle using continuous arms and the correct freestyle breathing technique with viable breath control. 

Swim 7+ metres of backstroke with continuous arms using a streamlined body position

Introduction to survival backstroke

Tread water 30+ seconds, 

Answer questions about dangers in the aquatic environment


Green Fish 

Swim 25 metres of each stroke - freestyle and backstroke

12 metres survival backstroke

Demonstrate a duck dive 

Be pulled through the water with a rope for 5 metres to safety. 

Tread water for 1 minute and survival scull on front and back for 30 seconds. 

Answer questions about dangers in the aquatic environment  


Orange Fish

Swim 50 metres freestyle and backstroke, 25 metres of survival backstroke

Introduction to breaststroke kick and pull

Tread water 2+ minutes, 

Answer questions about dangers in the aquatic environment


Purple Fish 

Swim 50 metres of freestyle, backstroke with technique and survival backstroke.

15 metres of breaststroke

Tread water for 2 minutes and rotate in an upright body position with clothes (wearing swimwear and short sleeved t-shirt).

Surface dive, swim underwater and recover an object from chest depth. 

Introduction to sidestroke.

Scull headfirst on front and back for 1 minute 

Answer questions about dangers in the aquatic environment 


Aqua Fish 

Swim 100 metres of each stroke - freestyle, backstroke and survival backstroke with technique.

Swim 25 metres of breaststroke, 15 metres sidestroke

Swim underwater and retrieve a sinker from chest depth

Introduction to dolphin kick.

Scull for 1 minute and then swim for 1 minute holding a flotation aid with clothes (wearing swimwear, short sleeved t-shirt and shorts). 

Answer questions about dangers in the aquatic environment. 


Navy Fish 

Swim 100+ metres of freestyle, backstroke; 100 metres of survival backstroke, 50 metres of breaststroke and 25 metres of sidestroke with technique.

Dolphin kick for 25+ metres.

Introduction to butterfly arms and breathing.  

Introduction to tumble turns. 

Swim slowly for 3 minutes changing survival strokes after each minute with and without clothes (wearing swimwear, short sleeved t-shirt and shorts).  

Demonstrate 3 non-contact rescues. Answer questions about dangers in the aquatic environments


PRE SQUAD/SQUAD

Developing Comets

Swim continuously 100+ metres of freestyle and backstroke

Swim 50 metres competitive breaststroke

Introduction to butterfly

Swim 200 metres distance  

Fully clothed, swim slowly for 5 minutes using 3 survival strokes 

Introduction to correct FINA acknowledged starts, turn and finishes for all competitive strokes    

Answer level and age appropriate questions about dangers in open water environments 


SQUAD

Comets Bronze

Swim continuously 600 metres, as 200 metres each of freestyle, backstroke, and competitive breaststroke 

Swim 50 metres of butterfly

Demonstrate a tumble turn  

Demonstrate correct FINA acknowledged starts, turn and finishes for all competitive strokes    

Fully-clothed in deep water - swim slowly for 6 minutes using 3 survival strokes 

Remove clothing in deep water

Answer level and age appropriate questions about dangers in open water environments 


Comets Silver

Swim continuously 900 metres, as 300 metres each of freestyle, backstroke, and competitive breaststroke

Swim 50+ metres of butterfly

Swim 200 metres Individual Medley

Swim 500 metres distance swim, mixed strokes

Full understanding of etiquette and causes of disqualification in competitive events 

Fully clothed, swim slowly for 15 minutes using 3 survival strokes 

Answer level and age appropriate questions about dangers in open water environments 


Comets Gold

Swim continuously 1200 metres, as 400 metres each of freestyle, backstroke, and competitive breaststroke

Swim 100+ metres of butterfly

Swim 400 metres Individual Medley

Swim 800 metres distance swim, mixed strokes

Full understanding of etiquette and causes of disqualification in competitive events 

Fully clothed, swim slowly for 15 minutes using 3 survival strokes 

Answer level and age appropriate questions about dangers in open water environments 


Comets Platinum

Swim continuously 1500 metres, as 500 metres each of freestyle, backstroke, and competitive breaststroke

Swim 200 metres of butterfly

Swim 400 metres Individual Medley

Swim 1200 metres distance swim, mixed strokes

Full understanding of etiquette and causes of disqualification in competitive events 

Fully clothed, swim slowly for 15 minutes using 3 survival strokes 

Answer level and age appropriate questions about dangers in open water environments 


Comets Emerald

Swim continuously 1000 metres of freestyle

Swim continuously 500 metres of backstroke and competitive breaststroke

Swim 300 metres of butterfly

Swim 800 metres Individual Medley

Swim 1500 metres distance swim, mixed strokes

Fully clothed, swim slowly for 30 minutes using 3 survival strokes 

Full understanding of etiquette and causes of disqualification in competitive events

Swim continuously 1200 metres of freestyle

Swim continuously 500 metres of backstroke and competitive breaststroke

Fully clothed, swim slowly for 30 minutes using 3 survival strokes 

At least one age qualifying time

Comets Diamond

Swim continuously 1500 metres of freestyle

Swim continuously 800 metres of backstroke

Swim continuously 500 metres of competitive breaststroke

Swim 800 metres Individual Medley

Swim 2000 metres distance swim, mixed strokes

Demonstrate 200m drills of each stroke

At least one state qualifying time

Full understanding of etiquette and causes of disqualification in competitive events 

Answer level and age appropriate questions about dangers in open water environments
